Most scientific conferences follow a singular predictable format: presentations by researchers, panel discussions and poster sessions. Breaking this mold requires a leap of imagination! Naturally, this is where artists come in! Visual images quickly cut through the massive pileup of verbal information to stimulate new ways of thinking about a scientific subject.
When I began making menstrual art, the medium initially seemed odd, maybe even a little novel. However, I quickly discovered I wasn’t alone. There were lots of other feminist artists from all around the world working with menstrual blood. These creatives were working independently as activists with the deepest commitment to destroying myths and taboos about menstruation and women’s bodies. These artists are more than activists; they are warriors demanding visibility for menstruation in the ongoing fight for gender equality.
It dawned on me that in order to affect maximum social change, these artists needed to connect with each other and the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research. By working together, these artists and researchers will be able to use their collective influence to energize the public menstrual dialogue and create a healthier, more positive perspective on periods.
